Juan Cueva joined Applied Ventures in 2017 as an associate intern and was hired as a Senior Associate in 2018. Dr. Cueva’s current investment focus is on industrial automation, advanced materials and life science. He is deeply interested in material engineering innovations that enable a novel rationale for detecting and modulating biological phenomenon.
Prior to Applied Ventures, Dr. Cueva worked in business development at Ultragenyx, a pharmaceutical company commercializing therapeutics for rare diseases. Prior to Ultragenyx, Juan was an early hire at a life sciences startup where he helped commercialize an interdisciplinary technology for mapping neural circuitry at the nanoscale level.
Dr. Cueva holds a B.S in Neuroscience and Ph.D. in Neurobiology, both from the University of California Los Angeles. He was a postdoctoral scholar in the laboratory of Miriam Goodman, Ph.D. at Stanford University where he investigated the molecular mechanism of mechanotransduction. He will receive an MBA from the Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley in 2019.
